All About Fredericksburg, VA

Fredericksburg is a small city with a rich history. Located around 47 miles south of Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg belongs to the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan area. The city is home to four Civil War battlefields, as well as a number of fascinating museums and historic sites.

Frederickburg History

Before European settlement, the Fredericksburg area was inhabited by the Manahoac tribe. English settlers began forming colonies around the Rappahannock River in the 17th century, but the city of Fredericksburg wasn’t officially founded until 1727. It was named after Frederick, the Prince of Wales.

During the Civil War, the city became an important site to both armies because of its location between Washington and the Confederate capital of Richmond. The Battle of Fredericksburg, which was fought in 1862, was one of the largest in the Civil War. Part of the town was destroyed during the fighting. The Second Battle of Fredericksburg was waged in 1863, and other battles took place nearby in the Spotsylvania County area.
