Orthodontic Wax: Everything You Need to Know

Orthodontic Wax: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re in braces or new to aligners, chances are you’ve heard of orthodontic wax. This simple, temporary solution can bring big relief when brackets, wires, or aligner attachments cause irritation. But many patients still have questions about how to use it, where to get it, and whether it works with Invisalign.

We’re answering the most common questions about orthodontic wax so you can use it like a pro!

What Is Orthodontic Wax?

Orthodontic wax is a soft, clear or white medical-grade wax designed to create a smooth barrier between your braces (or aligners) and the inside of your mouth. It helps reduce irritation caused by brackets, wires, or attachments rubbing against your cheeks, lips, or gums.

Where Can I Buy Orthodontic Wax?

Orthodontic wax is widely available and easy to find. You can pick it up:

  • At our office – Ask us for a complimentary pack anytime you're in!

  • At drugstores – Look for it in the dental care aisle at places like CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart.

  • Online – It’s available on Amazon, Walmart.com, and other online retailers. Just search “orthodontic wax.”

Can I Use Orthodontic Wax with Invisalign?

Yes! Even though Invisalign aligners are smooth, some patients experience irritation from attachments or edges of the aligners. Wax can be applied to the attachments or trimmed aligner edges for added comfort. Just make sure the area is dry before applying the wax.

Why Won’t My Orthodontic Wax Stick?

If the wax keeps falling off, here are a few common reasons:

  • The area is wet – Wax won’t stick to saliva-covered surfaces. Use a tissue to dry the bracket, wire, or aligner before applying the wax.

  • Too little wax – Break off a pea-sized piece and roll it into a ball before pressing it firmly over the area.

  • Wrong spot – Make sure you're applying it directly to the bracket or sharp edge, not just the gum or lip.

Does Orthodontic Wax Expire?

Yes, but very slowly. Most wax will have an expiration date printed on the packaging—usually 3 to 5 years from the manufacturing date. If it's dry, crumbly, or discolored, it’s best to toss it and grab a fresh pack.

Tips for Using Orthodontic Wax

  • Always wash your hands before applying wax.

  • Remove wax before eating and replace it with a fresh piece afterward.

  • Don’t reuse wax—use a clean piece each time.

  • Carry a small case with you in your bag or backpack just in case!
