Preliminary Visit to Orthodontist's Office

What will happen the first time I visit the orthodontist (initial consultation)?

The initial consultation starts with the first phone call.

When you call the office to set up an appointment for you or for your child, you’ll be asked for some information:

  • Address

  • Phone Number

  • Insurance Information

  • Social Security Number (use for verification with your insurance company)

Then, expect a couple of forms to be mailed or emailed to you, which include medical/dental health history, privacy notices and office information.

What Is A Typical Visit Like At Beecroft Orthodontics?

When you arrive, you’ll go on a quick tour of the office after your paperwork is being completed. If you've never been to an orthodontic office, it’s always nice to get a feel for what one looks like. They’re a little bit different than most dental offices because most orthodontic offices work in an open bay set up. With this set-up, the chairs aren't in individual rooms but out in the open, because you often see a lot of your friends, people you know from the community, and it allows us to work a lot more efficiently going from one chair to another. Our adjustment procedures are quick; usually anywhere from five to 10 minutes, but in a dental setting you’re there for at least an hour.

After the tour, you meet the treatment coordinator, who takes X-rays and pictures of you so we can see what’s going on in your mouth. We’ll contact your dental office beforehand and make sure you don’t have any recent X-rays, so you don’t unnecessarily have them. You will get to keep the pictures and X-rays.

Now, we have the appropriate information along with your concerns to diagnose the case and provide you different options. These include:

  • How long the case could last? (Treatment Span)

  • What’s involved? (Type of Braces and Appliances)

  • What your insurance will cover?

  • How much it will cost you out-of-pocket? (Treatment Budget)

The whole consultation takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and is relatively easy and pain-free. We also offer the option to Skype-in for the consultation if there is someone who would like to be there but cannot make it due to other commitments.

After you get into the consultation room, you’ll get a chance to meet the doctor. Dr. Matt Beecroft will look in your mouth, compare the findings in the mouth with the pictures and the X-rays, and you’ll have a chance to discuss your specific concerns and questions. At that time, you’ll probably talk about what type of treatment is necessary, how long the treatment will be, and more specifically, the cost. In this appointment, there are usually working models of teeth available in each consultation room. So if the orthodontist recommends a certain appliance to correct something or if you are just interested in seeing what Invisalign looks like versus traditional braces and clear braces, these teeth models are available to touch, feel and move around in your hands. This gives you a good idea of what the appliance may look like in your mouth. Usually the offices are good about telling you what you can expect from those different appliances.

The consultation is an important and a necessary part of what orthodontists do, because we tailor people’s treatments to them individually. Everyone wants the same outcome of a beautiful smile and straight teeth but the road from A to B is a little bit different.

Getting there often involves different techniques. So, it’s important to come in and see exactly what you need and the best way to get there. The nice thing about a tailored treatment plan is you may have something minor that requires three months of treatment and is relatively inexpensive. Or, you may be on the other side of the spectrum. But, the initial consultation lets you know where you are.

Fun Braces for Kids

Shaped braces for kids: What pricing and cost can you expect?

When most kids come in, they are excited about getting braces. I found the reason they’re so excited about getting braces is they’ve heard they get to pick rubber band colors.

With braces, there are the individual braces as well as the wire that straightens out the teeth. These small and circular rubber bands hold the wire into the braces and allow the wire to straighten the teeth. When a patient comes in every six to eight weeks for an adjustment, these colored elastics are changed. The younger patients get excited because they get to choose colors ranging from school colors to colors of their favorite sports team. Some even like to coordinate colors with their friends.

Sometimes kids come in and see our models of braces from metal and clear braces to braces in different shapes. Yes, there are actually shaped braces by WildSmiles. The kids get so excited about choosing from any of the following shapes: football, flower, heart, star, diamond, and Superman diamond symbol. By far, the most popular shape in our office is the heart--a top choice among girls.

Shaped braces function exactly like normal braces. The only difference is the actual shape of the base of the braces, which doesn't affect treatment. And, the cost of shaped braces is similar to the cost of ceramic/aesthetic braces. And, you don’t necessarily have to get one shape on all your teeth. You can mix and match them, which makes having braces more fun.

A mother brought her young daughter into her initial appointment practically kicking and screaming. But for various medical reasons, her teeth needed to be corrected. We showed her the models of our normal, clear, and shaped braces. The shaped braces really caught her eye. She asked her Mom if she could get the heart-shaped braces and her mom consented. Since then, she went from being nervous to being excited about her braces. She always talks about showing her friends her heart-shaped braces and how cool her friends think they are.

It’s nice to see how patients can go from being hesitant to excited about braces just by putting shapes on them.

In fact, my personal favorite is the Superman diamond symbol. Sometimes, I think about getting braces just to get the red, yellow, and blue Superman diamonds on my teeth. Maybe one day…

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends visiting the orthodontist around age seven. So contact Beecroft Orthodontics today for the appointment.

Types of Food that Braces Don't Like

Four types of food you should NOT eat if you have braces

When people are ready to get braces, one of the most common questions they have is: “Which food should I eat and which should I avoid?”

I’ll highlight four categories of food you should avoid or limit while wearing braces:

1.) Sticky food

The reason you want to avoid sticky foods like caramel and Laffy Taffy is you chew on them, they tear off, and leave residual food particles above the braces (particularly in the back where you chew most). Now, when that happens, the food gets stuck, making it hard to clean and get out. Then, the food just sits there, attracting bacteria and plaque to that area. And, there’s nothing worse than having food stuck up there for days, because the gums get inflamed, redden, and become “angry,” resorting in many side effects. So, avoid sticky food because it tends to get stuck in the braces; makes it hard to clean the braces; and causes several problems for your gums and teeth.

One of the main questions I hear from patients is: Can I chew gum? Now there are a couple of camps on this topic, because it’s actually really controversial in the orthodontic world.

I feel it’s okay to chew sugarless gum because it tends to stay together better than Laffy Taffy or caramel. It won’t pull apart and get stuck in braces as easily. Also, it’s sugarless, so it won’t have a lot of the side effects that come from sugary candy. Lastly, studies on sugarless gum show the chewing motion can actually relieve some of the initial pain associated with braces. Overall, sugarless gum is not necessarily a bad thing.

2.) Hard food

Avoid hard food because it can break the brackets off the teeth and the seal (glue interface) the brackets have with the teeth. Why do the brackets come off so easily? Well, they’re built that way. We’d much rather have the bracket pop off if you eat something hard versus your tooth actually chip off. So, at a certain force level, the brackets will pop off. That slows down your treatment, which can be annoying for patients. So, ensure you cut up food like apples and carrots, versus eating them whole. You also want to stay away from ice when you have braces and anything else really hard like hard candies like jawbreakers.

3.) Food that gets stuck in the gums and underneath the braces

The big one to avoid is popcorn. The kernels can get stuck underneath the actual brackets and bands (between your gums where the band wraps around the tooth). Then, you’ll experience a lot of swelling--a very uncomfortable feeling. I’ve even heard of instances where patients needed to go to the emergency room due to the swelling from food getting stuck. More often than not, the patients were eating foods they were told to stay away from. So, avoid anything small that could get stuck underneath the brackets or bands like sunflower seeds and food that breaks off and gets stuck like Doritos.

4) Sugary food

Limit soda and food with a lot of sugar because it just sits around the braces. It’s a lot harder to clean your teeth when you have braces. And, sugary food attracts bacteria and plaque, so cavities may develop.

So, make it easy for yourself. Avoid these types of food when you have braces and it’ll be much easier to keep your braces clean. Also, once you get your braces off, your teeth will look much healthier. For more information about oral hygiene you can visit our nearest office. Set your appointment with Dr. Matt. Beecroft today.
